Fly fishing has numerous clear cut characteristics that make it unlike from any other style of fishing, the two main features being the technique and bait used. Of course there’s also the special fly fishing equipment the angler uses which is distinctly different from any other method of fishing. Fly fishing is a style of angling that has history dating back into ancient times. While the fisherman may use a rod and reel then sit back, relax, and wait to catch a fish, the fly fisherman wades into the water and uses his practiced skills to lure the fish to strike.

Fly fishing has developed for it’s standard equipment a different rod and reel system that works unlike traditional fishing equipment. Fly fishing reels don’t have the same functions as traditional reels. They operate more as a storage device for line rather than a device used to land the fish. Fly rods are light and flexible and commonly made from bamboo, fiberglass or other composite materials. Fly rods are built in different lengths, so when you choose your fly fishing equipment it’s best to know what species of fish you’re after. Traditionally, many fly fisherman go after trout or salmon but other species of fish can be caught using fly fishing equipment.

The type of fishing line a fly rod uses is another unique feature of this equipment. The line is thicker than any other type of fishing line so together with it’s weight and thickness along with the weight of the fly gives fly fishing it’s unique casting technique which the fly fisherman must master.

While the fly rod is probably the most important piece of fly fishing equipment, it’s the type, weight, and color of the artificial fly that affects the success the fly fisherman and determines what he’ll catch today. Flies fall into three different categories, surface floating flies, partially submerged flies, and below surface flies, each having it’s own specific use.

Fly fishing equipment can be expensive, but don’t worry, the fly rod and reel combination is usually the most expensive purchase. The flies and fishing line are relatively inexpensive. Often, experienced fly fisherman will eventually learn how to tie their own flies to use. This gives your fly fishing experience a custom feel to it, and can cut down costs.
