Alaska has so many great fishing rivers and streams that run for miles that float fly fishing Alaska is the way to go. There are many outfitters that can provide this service. The float season is short in Alaska but the days are long.

Alaska is divided into five different fishing regions. Most float trips are located into two of those. First, the Bristol Bay Fishing Region where most float trips are on the Alagnak River and Moraine Creek. Both are excellent fisheries for rainbow and brown trout. Catch and release is highly encouraged if not mandated by most float trips. The majority of float trips last six days and camping out is the mode of lodging, although the amenities are five star. The average cost of these float trips is $3,200.00 per person and include air transport from King Salmon via floatplane to the respective lodge and all meals, many gourmet, and all necessary camping gear. Full service is the calling card for float trips.

You don’t have so be an expert fly fisherman to enjoy these trips. Whatever your skill level from rank beginner to average skills you will catch fish and learn more about fly fishing in the bargain.

The next region I will discuss is the Interior Region, specially the Yukon-Kuskokwin Delta. The delta tributaries are an excellent fishery for salmon and trout. Particularly in August and September when Coho salmon begin to run and trout fishing picks up. There are many outfitters in the region with guides but one outfitter is truly for the outdoorsmen. Pa Pa Bear Adventures offers seven different rivers to fish each with its own characteristics. But he only supplies the boat and the floatplane transport to the put-in. You must supply all the rest, tackle, camping gear, food and the expertise to handle a raft in possibly rough water. For the expert fisherman it is a chance to truly get away from the crowds and save a few dollars too. Most of his trips run in the $1,400 range. But again these trips are not for the faint of heart. Portage is required on some rivers and there is a weight limit of 1200 lbs for 2 to 3 people including the camping gear, tackle, food and the people themselves.

Alaska float fly fishing is varied and expansive. It allows the angler opportunities to fish for Artic char, grayling, Dolly Varden, Redbands and five different species of salmon. The Pink salmon also known as Humpy comes upstream every even year.
