Stay Warm and Dry in Fly Fishing Waders

Fly fishing waders are a significant and often costly part of your fly fishing gear. Depending on what kind of fishing you’ll be doing, or what you need in a pair of fly fishing waders you could pay hundreds of dollars for a good pair of waders. Waders can be important in any kind of fishing, but fly fishing waders are especially important in cold water to keep you warm. Not only that, they protect you from the rocks hidden in the water. Fly fishermen often choose to go wading in the water while fishing and waders keep you dry and warm in the cool water allowing you to fish for as long as you like. As with any of your equipment, you want to be sure you take care of your fly fishing waders.
Whenever you go on a fishing trip make sure you are aware of your equipment condition at all times when it is being used. Don’t assume that just because you spent a lot of money on your gear that it is rugged and can’t be damaged. Take the time to check your equipment and properly take care of and store your gear at the end of the day. Take the extra time to check your waders for holes and possible leaks and repair them on the spot so they’ll be ready next time.
Checking your fly fishing waders isn’t as difficult or tiresome as you may believe either. Be sure you clean them well and then check the outside first. Even if everything looks good, it’s still wise to check the inside too. You can do this a couple of ways. One is to use a small light that you run down inside the waders in a dark room looking for pin holes. If that doesn’t work for you or you want to be extra carefull, you can do a submersion test either placing them in water and applying outside pressure or pouring water in and watching for beads of water to form on the outside.
Fly fishing waders are an crucial part of your equipment. Whether they are bought or borrowed, you’ll want to make sure you take care of them. Hang up your waders after fly fishing and let them dry thoroughly before storing them with your other gear. Check for leaks. And if need be, get a patch kit for repairs. Don’t let lax attention to your fly fishing waders and other gear dampen your next fly fishing adventure.
